When visiting China, you will notice the wide array of options available for travelling from one place to another. The choices are dependent on how comfortably you wish to travel, how quickly you wish to get there, how important personal space is to you, etc.
Although taxi cabs are the most expensive means of transport, they are relatively more comfortable and generally quick for reaching your destination. However, you will soon observe the lack of seat belts or any safety equipment for children, the rather fast speed they travel in, and the haphazard style of driving.
Tuk tuks are the incredibly cheap option, where you can travel several miles for just a few pence. However, you would have to forget the idea of comfort; the seats are hard, the ride is very jerky, and if you are slightly on the taller side, your head would keep hitting the thin metal sheet on every bump and turn. That said it is an enjoyable ride and it all adds to the experience.
With regards to travelling costs, motorbike taxis are the halfway point between taxi cabs and tuk tuks. However time-wise, it is the fastest means to get to your destination. Safety is a concern, as some of these motorbike taxis don't have a passenger helmet. And although they accept two to three people at a time (excluding the driver), it is definitely not recommended.

The local buses are also very cheap, where all trips cost just 1-2RMB (10-20 pence), regardless of how far you intend to travel. Peak times might get extremely crowded, but most other parts of the day they are very convenient.
Although the popularity of Metro (underground trains) is on the rise, it is still only available in a small number of cities. They are again very cheap to travel on (similar price to buses) and are very convenient.
